Short bio:

Dr. Héctor A. Ruiz is Full Professor in the School of Chemistry at the Autonomous University of Coahuila, Biorefinery Group, Food Research Department, Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. He graduated in Chemical Engineering at the Autonomous University of Coahuila in 2004. He was leading operations engineer in Magnelec Industries. Subsidiary of Peñoles Group in 2007 (Mexico), obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Centre of Biological Engineering at the University of Minho, Portugal in 2011. Then 1 year as postdoctoral researcher at University of Minho (Portugal) and University of Vigo (Spain) under the supervision of Prof. José A. Teixeira and Prof. Juan C. Parajó (2012). Dr. Ruiz is currently the leader of biorefinery group that is actively working on the development of biorefinery strategies for the production high added-value compounds and bioethanol from lignocellulosic and macroalgal biomass. His research has been specifically in bioethanol production of second and third generation, hydrothermal pretreatment (autohydrolysis), simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, modeling of enzymatic hydrolysis and bioreactor design. Dr. Ruiz has conducted several research stays in the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (Cinvestav), Guadalajara- Unit (Mexico), Federal University of Sergipe (Brazil), Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE, Brazil), in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia (Canada), CIEMAT- Renewable Energy Division, Biofuels Unit (Spain), University of Jaén (Spain). Dr. Ruiz acts as leader of the pretreatment step in the Mexican Bioenergy Innovation Centre, Bioalcohols Cluster (SENER-Mexico). He has authored or co-authored of several research publications with an H factor of 12 (Google Scholar Citations, May 2016). Currently, he is Editor of Bioethanol Journal (De Gruyter Open, since 2014), Associate Editor of BioEnergy Research Journal (Springer, since 2015) and participates in the Editorial Advisory Board of the Industrial Crops and Products (Elsevier). He is also a regular reviewer for various scientific journals, and Dr. Ruiz was awarded with Best Reviewer Award in 2014 granted by the international journal Renewable Energy (Elsevier, Oxford, UK).
